A Reference Grammar of Russian (Reference Grammars - Cambridge)

This textbook describes and systematizes all aspects of the grammar of Russian--including patterns of orthography, sounds, inflection, syntax, tense-aspect-mood, word order, and intonation. It is especially concerned with the meaning of combinations of words (constructions) and the core concept is that of the predicate history (a record of the states of entities through time and across possibilities). Using predicate histories, the book presents an integrated account of the semantics of verbs, nouns, case, and aspect. It will appeal to students, scholars and language professionals interested in Russian.

Learn in Your Car: Russian, the Complete Language Source (From Level 1 to Level 3)

Listeners learn pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar of Russian without the need of a textbook.

Level 1: Key words and phrases, basic grammar skills, emphasizes travel needs

There is a lot of information in the course. Don't expect to learn the language with this. But, you can learn about the Language. If you want a start on studying the Russian language this is a good cheap place to start.

Teach yourself Russian (Teach yourself books)

Russian belongs to the Slavonic group of languages, which includes Bulgarian, Polish, Serbian and Czech.

This book was first printed in 1943. I've got the 1958 edition, whose Preface says something which wouldn't fit our modern times: "qualified Russian teachers are still scarce in England". And then you would have to consider the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. That surely had an impact on the Russian language presence in English territory.

Each lesson in this book has the following elements: Russian grammar, words for everyday use, lots of exercises using coloquial sentences, and extracts of poetry and prose. As for the outlook, I mean, the script, I agree with what many say: "how funny the Russian letters look, rather like ours upside down".

Maximilian Fourman thinks Russian is "no harder than any other language". His justification is as follows: since the language is virtually phonetic, its words are "comparatively easy to learn to pronounce". Plus: "most of the letters can be pronounced in only one way"

Russian is also "amazingly uniform" [he meant in the vast expanse of the Soviet Republics], contrary to English with its variations, say, in London, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall. And yet, like English, Russian has incorporated many words from Latin, Greek and other European languages.

Reviews

This small dense manual is good for those who have completed a year or two of Russian in college and would like summaries of grammatical constructions using a broad ranging vocabulary. In addition to verb conjugation, there are detailed declensions of nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and adverbs, with a decent attempt to review and enlarge your vocabulary. The are many digressions treating irregular forms but these are not so numerous as to confuse or mar the main treatment. There are no pronunciation guides and so you are expected to be able to work out the sounds of the words by knowing the Russian alphabet pretty much backwards and forwards; syllables are given accent markings as appropriate, though. There is a section listing many important verbs and their English equivalents. If you are fuzzy on terms of grammatical use, there is a section explaining them. The book is not for beginners, but ancillary material is available in other books to allow a persistent student to advance.

Pronounce Russian Properly: Master the pronunciation and the music of Russian

We have no doubts you have experienced this problem before (formulated one way or another):

“I have been learning Russian for so long but I still have a hard time understanding native speakers, or being understood by them”.

Well, we can assure you, it is NOT your fault! The problem lies in the bad habit to study languages almost solely from texts. Does it make sense to start speaking a language if you cannot hear it properly yet? If you do not know which sounds make up the language? If you do not know how to pronounce them? We believe it does not.

Instead, we offer you to learn good pronunciation from the start, with :

A pronunciation guide, to start hearing and speaking Russian properly from the beginningLearn to produce Russian vowels and consonants (all of the sounds used in speech, NOT just the alphabet letters)

Learn to stress the right syllable in each word

Learn to stress the right word in each sentence

Learn to respect the rhythm of the Russian language

Learn to respect the intonation patterns of the Russian language.

International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions for each of the examples, so you can see the pronunciation of every word and sentence instantly

Over 300 of the most frequently used words in spoken Russian

A special technique to model your pronunciation after that of native speakers, along with the material to practice.

Pronounce Russian properly is an excellent resource for students, tourists, and business people looking for a comprehensive introduction to this complex (but not complicated!) language.

With countless examples, you will be surprised at just how quickly you can learn how to pronounce Russian correctly.

Perfect for beginners who want to develop good pronunciation habits from the start or for people who already know lots of vocabulary but have difficulty understanding native speakers or be understood by them.
