Using Python for Automation

In any organization, there are tasks that would benefit from automation, but often the processes are too niche for standard software. Python is an easy-to-learn programming language that allows organizations to script custom automation and reap the time-savings. In this course, you can learn how to automate your own repetitive tasks using Python. This course provides a “cookbook” for developers and non-developers alike, allowing you to automate almost anything: from filling out PDFs and launching programs, to sending emails and voicemails, working with calendars, and organizing files and folders. Discover how to use Python and open-source libraries and tools such as Beautiful Soup and Selenium to craft elegant solutions that do the grunt work for you.

Learning Django

With Django, you can take web applications from concept to launch in a matter of hours. It's a free and open-source framework that's designed on top of Python and supports data-driven architecture. In this course, learn what you need to know to get up and running with Django. Instructor Caleb Smith walks through creating a brand-new Django project, defining a data model and fields, querying the database, and using the framework's built-in URL handlers, views, and templates to structure the rest of the back end. Plus, learn how to incorporate CSS and JavaScript to enhance the style and usability of your Django templates.

Unit Testing in Python

Unit testing—which involves testing small, isolatable pieces of code—can help you catch and fix bugs before they crop up in your final product. And by adopting test-driven development (TDD) and writing unit tests before production code, you can take even greater responsibility for your project's quality. Curious about how to best approach unit testing in your own Python projects? This course shows you how. Join instructor Jasmine Omeke as she goes over TDD techniques for Python projects using the pytest testing framework and a Docker container.

Jasmine begins by providing a basic overview of both TDD and pytest as she shows how to write a basic test. She then delves into how to use pytest features to automatically run unit tests, as well as how to best organize your pytest projects. Then, see how to hop into an existing project and use pytest tests to figure out the core behavior of the source code, determine which source code functions still need to be tested, and add in more tests.

Python Object-Oriented Programming

The object-oriented programming (OOP) features in Python make it easier to build programs of increasing complexity and modularity. In this course, you can learn how to apply core OOP principles like inheritance and composition along with some Python-specific features like “magic” methods and data classes to build programs that are extensible and efficient. Begin by brushing up on some object-oriented basics, and then use Python features like magic methods to make your classes integrate tightly with the Python language and data classes to dramatically reduce the amount of boilerplate code needed to build data-centric objects.
