Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Niels Bohr, Einstein. Their insights shook our perception of who we are and where we stand in the world, and in their wake have left an uneasy coexistence: science vs. religion, faith vs. empirical inquiry. Which is the keeper of truth? Which is the true path to understanding reality?

After forty years of study with some of the greatest scientific minds, as well as a lifetime of meditative, spiritual, and philosophic study, the Dalai Lama presents a brilliant analysis of why all avenues of inquiry—scientific as well as spiritual—must be pursued in order to arrive at a complete picture of the truth. Through an examination of Darwinism and karma, quantum mechanics and philosophical insight into the nature of reality, neurobiology and the study of consciousness, the Dalai Lama draws significant parallels between contemplative and scientific examinations of reality.

Through an examination of Darwinism and karma, quantum mechanics and philosophical insight into the nature of reality, neurobiology and the study of consciousness, the Dalai Lama draws significant parallels between contemplative and scientific examinations of reality.

This breathtakingly personal examination is a tribute to the Dalai Lama’s teachers—both of science and spirituality. The legacy of this book is a vision of the world in which our different approaches to understanding ourselves, our universe, and one another can be brought together in the service of humanity.

Review

“The Dalai Lama lost spiritual leadership in his own country, but now exercises it around the world. Like all good teachers, he comes to learn. He found that what Buddhism lacked in his country was a fruitful interchange with reason and modern science. Here he fosters that exchange, at a time when some Christians have turned their backs on science and the Enlightenment. We are losing what he has gained.”
—Garry Wills, author of Why I Am a Catholic“With disarming honesty, humility, and respect, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has explored the relationship between religion and science and suggested the way in which they can affirm and qualify each other’s insights. By juxtaposing traditional Buddhist teaching with the discoveries of modern physics and biology, he infuses the debate about such contentious issues as the origins of the universe, the nature of human consciousness, the evolution of species and genetic engineering with intimations of profound spirituality and shows how these questions can further our search for ultimate meaning. But above all, his gentle but insistent call for compassion is desperately needed in our torn and conflicted world.”
—Karen Armstrong, author of A HIstory of God and The Spiral Staircase

The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World (Art of Happiness Book)

Blending common sense and modern psychiatry, The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World applies Buddhist tradition to twenty-first-century struggles in a relevant way. The result is a wise approach to dealing with human problems that is both optimistic and realistic, even in the most challenging times.

How can we expect to find happiness and meaning in our lives when the modern world seems such an unhappy place?

His Holiness the Dalai Lama has suffered enormously throughout his life, yet he always seems to be smiling and serene. How does he do it? In The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World, Dr. Cutler walks readers through the Dalai Lama's philosophy on how to achieve peace of mind and come to terms with life's inherent suffering. Together, the two examine the roots of many of the problems facing the world and show us how we can approach these calamities in a way that alleviates suffering, and helps us along in our personal quests to be happy. Through stories, meditations, and in-depth conversations, the Dalai Lama teaches readers to identify the cultural influences and ways of thinking that lead to personal unhappiness, making sense of the hardships we face personally, as well as the afflictions suffered by others.

Reviews

My favorite book of 2017
My favorite book of 2017! I know this was written a while ago, but I just got around to it and truly loved it. I am going to read it again!

His best
I have read three Dalai Lama books and this one is my favorite. This book is a sequel but I read it first – no problems there. I went and read the first “The art of happiness” and still found this book more enjoyable. The book tackles the question of how one can find happiness despite caring so much for others happiness when we see so much violence going on in the world. I was working in probation at the time so the book was a tremendous help! Highly recommend!

The End of Suffering and the Discovery of Happiness: The Path of Tibetan Buddhism

A remarkable and rare overview of the key aspects of Tibetan Buddhism provided by His Holiness the Dalai Lama

The End of Suffering and the Discovery of Happiness presents a clear and straightforward road map for how we might end our experience of suffering and discover happiness, drawn by the most celebrated spiritual master of Buddhism—His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

In this insightful volume, he not only describes what religion can contribute to mankind, but also accentuates the significance of truly practicing religion and understanding what it is that mankind really needs.

His Holiness explains the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma; the purpose and the means of generating the mind of enlightenment; and the twelve links of dependent arising, as well as other preliminary concepts. Tsongkhapa’s The Three Principal Aspects of the Path and The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment have also been beautifully described in great detail.

In The End of Suffering and the Discovery of Happiness, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, renowned for his warm-heartedness and his message of love, compassion, and peace offers an illuminating glimpse into the core of Tibetan Buddhism.

Reviews

I read several books by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, including the The Art of Happiness and The Universe in a Single Atom. Attended his live-teachings in France and Germany, watched several symposia of the Mind and Life Institute, etc. And strongly recommend to read “The End of Suffering and The Discovery of Happiness: The Path of Tibetan Buddhism” if you are serious about expanding your awareness about the paths of Tibetan Buddhism, and how they apply to our daily lives.

After introducing the three turnings of the Dharma Wheel, emptiness and Tantras, this book explains the teachings of Je Tsongkhapa. You can discover the importance of the intention of becoming free and happy for the benefit of all beings, and how to generate such intention. Buddhism paths are often very practical in nature and value the importance of walking the path for the common welfare. To live a skillful life becomes easier once you understand the law of co-arising and impermanence, all beautifully and poetically introduced in this book.

“The End of Suffering and The Discovery of Happiness: The Path of Tibetan Buddhism” may require a bit more attention from the reader, compared to the other mainstream books by the Dalai Lama. However, this commitment is generously rewarded by the insights and beautiful drawings you will find among these pages.

Deep gratitude goes to His Holiness for making Tibetan Buddhism accessible, sharing his meritorious ocean of wisdom with caring words. To the several translators who worked on this book and to Jeremy Russell who edited most of the book.

An Introduction to Buddhism (Core Teachings of Dalai Lama)

The "Core Teachings of the Dalai Lama" series begins with this small book of teachings by His Holiness, the perfect introduction to traditional Tibetan Buddhist thought and practice.

There is no one more suited to introduce beginners—and remind seasoned practitioners— of the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism than His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Speaking to an audience of Western students, the Dalai Lama shows us how to apply basic Buddhist principles to our day-to-day lives. Starting with the very foundation of Buddhism, the Four Noble Truths, he provides the framework for understanding the Buddha’s first teachings on suffering, happiness, and peace. He follows with commentary on two of Buddhism’s most profound texts: The Eight Verses on Training the Mind and Atisha’s Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, often referring to the former as one of his main sources of inspiration for the practice of compassion. With clear, accessible language and the familiar sense of humor that infuses nearly all of his work, the Dalai Lama invites us all to develop innermost awareness, a proper understanding of the nature of reality, and heartfelt compassion for all beings.

This book was previously published under the title Lighting the Way.

The “Core Teachings of the Dalai Lama” series begins with this small book of teachings by His Holiness, the perfect introduction to traditional Tibetan Buddhist thought and practice.

The Art of Happiness, 10th Anniversary Edition: A Handbook for Living

An updated edition of a beloved classic, the original book on happiness, with new material from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Dr. Howard Cutler.

Nearly every time you see him, he's laughing, or at least smiling. And he makes everyone else around him feel like smiling. He's the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet, a Nobel Prize winner, and a hugely sought-after speaker and statesman. Why is he so popular? Even after spending only a few minutes in his presence you can't help feeling happier.

If you ask him if he's happy, even though he's suffered the loss of his country, the Dalai Lama will give you an unconditional yes. What's more, he'll tell you that happiness is the purpose of life, and that the very motion of our life is toward happiness. How to get there has always been the question. He's tried to answer it before, but he's never had the help of a psychiatrist to get the message across in a context we can easily understand.

The Art of Happiness is the book that started the genre of happiness books, and it remains the cornerstone of the field of positive psychology.

Through conversations, stories, and meditations, the Dalai Lama shows us how to defeat day-to-day anxiety, insecurity, anger, and discouragement. Together with Dr. Howard Cutler, he explores many facets of everyday life, including relationships, loss, and the pursuit of wealth, to illustrate how to ride through life's obstacles on a deep and abiding source of inner peace. Based on 2,500 years of Buddhist meditations mixed with a healthy dose of common sense, The Art of Happiness is a book that crosses the boundaries of traditions to help readers with difficulties common to all human beings. After being in print for ten years, this book has touched countless lives and uplifted spirits around the world.

Reviews

This book changed my life when I first read it in 2009. I was depressed and negative from some difficult life events and stuck that way, losing all sense of self. Reading this was hard work. I focused on everything very hard, took notes, self-reflected, and was determined to practice compassion and understanding. I payed attention to my thought patterns and weeded out the negative thoughts and changed them to positive ones. I have always had a temper so when I feel myself giving into it, I read the chapter on anger and find my control again. It’s amazing and I’d recommend it to anyone who is willing to dedicate themselves to change and read it with an open mind. Anyone from any religion can use and appreciate it, including atheists. It’s a way of living every day.
