The New York Times bestseller that explains one of the most important perceptual shifts in the history of humankind

Scott Adams was one of the earliest public figures to predict Donald Trump’s election. The mainstream media regarded Trump as a lucky clown, but Adams – best known as “the guy who created Dilbert” -- recognized a level of persuasion you only see once in a generation. We’re hardwired to respond to emotion, not reason, and Trump knew exactly which emotional buttons to push.

The point isn’t whether Trump was right or wrong, good or bad. Adams goes beyond politics to look at persuasion tools that can work in any setting—the same ones Adams saw in Steve Jobs when he invested in Apple decades ago. Win Bigly is a field guide for persuading others in any situation—or resisting the tactics of emotional persuasion when they’re used on you.

This revised edition features a bonus chapter that assesses just how well Adams foresaw the outcomes of Trump’s tactics with North Korea, the NFL protesters, Congress, and more.

Loserthink: How Untrained Brains Are Ruining America

From the creator of Dilbert and author of Win Bigly, a guide to spotting and avoiding loserthink: sneaky mental habits trapping victims in their own bubbles of reality.

If you’ve been on social media lately, or turned on your TV, you may have noticed a lot of dumb ideas floating around.

“We know when history will repeat and when it won’t.”
“We can tell the difference between evidence and coincidences.”
“The simplest explanation is usually true.”

Wrong, wrong, and dangerous!

If we’re not careful, loserthink would have us believe that every Trump supporter is a bigoted racist, addicts should be responsible for fixing the opioid epidemic, and that your relationship fell apart simply because you chewed with your mouth open.

Even the smartest people can slip into loserthink’s seductive grasp. This book will teach you how to spot and avoid it–and will give you scripts to respond when hollow arguments are being brandished against you, whether by well-intentioned friends, strangers on the internet, or political pundits. You’ll also learn how to spot the underlying causes of loserthink, like the inability to get ego out of your decisions, thinking with words instead of reasons, failing to imagine alternative explanations, and making too much of coincidences.

Your bubble of reality doesn’t have to be a prison. This book will show you how to break free–and, what’s more, to be among the most perceptive and respected thinkers in every conversation.

Review

Lavish Praise for Loserthink

“They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but they never tell you why. So I went ahead and judged it. Looks great!” – Juan Variable
“Don’t think of this book as something you ‘read.’ Think of it as ‘survival.’ And you want to survive, don’t you?” – M. Wordthinker
“If you love this book, you are probably part of a clandestine global conspiracy to control the world. You’ll probably deny it, but I know what you are thinking.” – Reed Mines
“The simplest explanation for why you will love this book is that it is the best book in the world. Duh. Simple.” – Sir William of Ockham
“This is the only book I have ever read. I highly recommend it because I can’t imagine how any other book could be better.” – Noah Mashnashun
“There are many similarities between this book and the Holy Bible. For example, they both use words. I’m not saying the author of this book is a deity, but obviously things are heading in that direction.” – Matthew, Mark, John

How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big

Scott Adams has likely failed at more things than anyone you’ve ever met or anyone you’ve even heard of. So how did he go from hapless office worker and serial failure to the creator of Dilbert, one of the world’s most famous syndicated comic strips, in just a few years? In How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, Adams shares the strategy he has used since he was a teen to invite failure in, to embrace it, then pick its pocket.

No career guide can offer advice for success that works for everyone. As Adams explains, your best bet is to study the ways of others who made it big and try to glean some tricks and strategies that make sense for you. Adams pulls back the covers on his own unusual life and shares what he learned for turning one failure after another into something good and lasting.

Adams reveals that he failed at just about everything he’s tried, including his corporate career, his inventions, his investments, and his two restaurants. But there’s a lot to learn from his personal story, and a lot of humor along the way. While it’s hard for anyone to recover from a personal or professional failure, Adams discovered some unlikely truths that helped to propel him forward. For instance:

• Goals are for losers. Systems are for winners.
• “Passion” is bull. What you need is personal energy.
• A combination of mediocre skills can make you surprisingly valuable.
• You can manage your odds in a way that makes you look lucky to others.

You won’t find a road map to success in this audiobook. But Adams hopes you can laugh at his failures while discovering some unique and helpful ideas on your own path to personal victory. As he writes:

“This is a story of one person’s unlikely success within the context of scores of embarrassing failures. Was my eventual success primarily a result of talent, luck, hard work, or an accidental just-right balance of each? All I know for sure is that I pursued a conscious strategy of managing my opportunities in a way that would make it easier for luck to find me.”

Reviews

Advice from a Cartoonist

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend who is a life coach. She believes in a “systems approach” ranging from daily organization all the way to getting one’s life priorities in order. The book was written as a casual life story with odds and ends thrown in. It wasn’t one of those with a series of life-changing revelations about success, followed by a list of changes you MUST make, shifting to wondering where to begin, and ending with nagging disappointment at not reaching ANY of those big goals. Not only was it an easy, conversational read, but I was able to NAIL the results according to the point of the book. As Adams says, you shouldn’t take life advice from a cartoonist, but I did. I would enjoy reading more of his books as he is an interesting and outside-the-box thinker. Though it’s not an earth-shattering-revelation tome, I give it 5 stars for ease and likeliness of success.

God's Debris: A Thought Experiment

Explore the mysteries and magic of the cosmos with the acclaimed creator of Dilbert.

God's Debris is the first non-Dilbert, non-humor book by best-selling author Scott Adams. Adams describes God's Debris as a thought experiment wrapped in a story. It's designed to make your brain spin around inside your skull.

Imagine that you meet a very old man who—you eventually realize—knows literally everything. Imagine that he explains for you the great mysteries of life: quantum physics, evolution, God, gravity, light psychic phenomenon, and probability—in a way so simple, so novel, and so compelling that it all fits together and makes perfect sense. What does it feel like to suddenly understand everything?

You may not find the final answer to the big question, but God's Debris might provide the most compelling vision of reality you will ever read. The thought experiment is this: Try to figure out what's wrong with the old man's explanation of reality. Share the book with your smart friends, then discuss it later while enjoying a beverage.

It has no violence or sex, but the ideas are powerful and not appropriate for readers under fourteen.

Reviews

Definitely Not Dilbert

This is a light pop-philosophy book with some interesting ideas. I think it would be a great read for a young person with an inquiring mind who was just getting into deeper philosophical concepts.

This is the reading equivalet to hanging out with a smart friend over drinks; you’re not going to solve any of the universe’s great riddles, but you’ll point a few out.Adams sprinkles in some good old-fashioned advice that’s worth paying attention to. I enjoyed that stuff best of all because it gets philsophy back to the one question that really matters, “how do you live a good life?”

Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook

Behind the closed doors of corporate management lurks a manifesto so devious, so insidious, and of such diabolic power, it has the ability to transform normal human beings into paradigm–spewing zombies. Its purpose: to help bosses stick it to their employees. Its author: none other than Dogbert, the canine corporate consultant out to rule the world.

All too often, new managers make mistakes such as rewarding good work with good pay, communicating clearly and improving departmental efficiency. Dogbert shows that this could have devastating consequences: Employees begin to expect fair treatment and compensation, productive workers show results (making managers look bad by comparison), and the department's future budget allotment could be decreased because it spends only what it needs.

Drawing from his years of experience tormenting Dilbert and advising his boss, our Machiavellian mutt uses pithy essays, illustrated by scores of comic strips, to teach neophyte managers such potent practices as:

The power of verbal instructions: Sound like a boss while maintaining complete deniability!

Empty promises of promotion: all the motivational benefits, none of the costs!

Pretending to care: Learn how to hear without listening!

Incentives: Inspire employees by giving them worthless knickknacks!

Once again firmly establishing Scott Adams as the spokesman for the absurdities of the workplace (and Dogbert as the guru of sticking it to the masses), Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook is the perfect gift for all cubicle dwellers and their bosses.
