About the Author

Brian Bradley is a self-taught 3D artist and business owner.

Brian started experimenting with creative software and 3D applications around the end of 1993, wondering whether or not he could make a living working with such cool tools! By 1998 he had started his own multimedia business, working on projects ranging from flying logos to graphic design for clothing and vehicles to entire product and architectural visualization projects.

While learning the tools of his trade, Brian developed a keen awareness of the need for well-explained, high-quality training that could make software tools accessible and open to anyone who wanted to learn them. In 2007 he turned the attention of his family business toward the full-time teaching of the graphic design and production tools he loves to others.

SketchUp: Shadow Studies - Full Video Tutorials

Shadow studies are essential, as the play of light and shadow on architectural surfaces informs aesthetic perceptions, correlates with solar heat gain, affects how we use public spaces, impacts neighboring properties, and influences why we might choose a particular site. In this course, learn how to approach shadow studies using SketchUp, the popular 3D modeling application. Instructor Scott Onstott starts by examining how sunlight illuminates the earth at different latitudes and hemispheres, and explaining why solstices and equinoxes are the key times of year to analyze. Then, he demonstrates how to create a set of 3D helper tools based on a site's particular solar altitudes and azimuths. He goes on to use these tools to design an awning that provides shade during the summer and lets light in during the winter. In addition, he shows how to geolocate and reorient a massing model, save scenes at key times of day and seasons of the year, and output an animated time-lapse shadow study.

SketchUp Pro: Tools and Techniques - Full Video Tutorials

SketchUp Pro may offer "3D for everyone," but that doesn't mean it's light on professional tools. Learn how to create more compelling 3D graphics using the advanced features in SketchUp Pro. Author George Maestri introduces solid modeling with the Boolean operations and Trim and Split, adding and manipulating cameras, and creating terrains from contours and from scratch. Then he dives into the new Dynamic Components, SketchUp's most powerful feature, which can add motion and interactivity to a model. Last, he explores two companion apps (LayOut, for creating documents featuring SketchUp models, and Style Builder, for creating custom styles) and reviews the plugins available through the Extension Warehouse.

SketchUp Pro may offer “3D for everyone,” but that doesn’t mean it’s light on professional tools. Learn how to create more compelling 3D graphics using the advanced features in SketchUp Pro. Author George Maestri introduces solid modeling with the Boolean operations and Trim and Split, adding and manipulating cameras, and creating terrains from contours and from scratch. Then he dives into the new Dynamic Components, SketchUp’s most powerful feature, which can add motion and interactivity to a model. Last, he explores two companion apps (LayOut, for creating documents featuring SketchUp models, and Style Builder, for creating custom styles) and reviews the plugins available through the Extension Warehouse.

We all want a room to call our own. Personal structures like man caves and she sheds give you a hideaway from life stresses. Do you want a light and airy garden structure to curl up with a good book or to enjoy conversation with a friend, or would a lounge with a minibar where you can watch the game while working on your motorcycle be your idea of a good time? SketchUp, "the easiest, most fun, entirely free 3D drawing tool in the world," is the perfect program to design your unique space. Join Scott Onstott in this course, as he shows how to model an existing structure like a garage and transform it into a personal sanctuary with SketchUp's intuitive 3D toolset. Discover how to model walls, doors, windows, furniture, and even a private bathroom, and finesse your design with lighting and shading.

V-Ray is a very popular and high-quality third-party renderer for SketchUp. With V-Ray, you can add naturalistic lighting, cameras, reflections, and diffuse materials to your SketchUp models and scenes. This course will use a single arch viz scene (an architectural visualization with interior and exterior elements) to demonstrate all of these options. Author Brian Bradley covers all of the V-Ray light types (from Sun and Sky to Sphere), irradiance mapping, physical cameras, materials, and V-Ray quality controls. By the end of the course, you'll know how to use V-Ray features to make your SketchUp models look their very best.

SketchUp for Set Design

The details of 3D modeling can be overwhelming when you design your first set. Using SketchUp frees the designer and builder from worrying about perspective and proportion. John Romeo guides you through the process of making each piece of scenery contained in the set and creating polished presentation and construction drawings using SketchUp Pro and the SU Podium and V-Ray renderers. Learn how to create a simple ground plan and start adding the walls, posts, beams, skylight, backdrop, and other construction details. Discover how to add furniture and props, and design a realistic lighting grid. By the end of the course, you should be able to put together a drawing package for a basic loft set.

About the Author

John Romeo is a design and construction consultant, specializing in drafting, 3D, and woodworking.

In 1977 John founded J. Romeo Workshop in Tribeca, specializing in architectural woodworking, scenery design, and construction. Fine woodworking is one of John's passions, so he uses many of his joinery techniques to produce high-quality scenery and exhibits. In 1993, he founded The Farm Studio: a film and video studio. For several years John's primary business was designing and building sets for theatre, video, film, and commercials. His clients ranged from IBM and AT&T to Lincoln Center Theatre. He sold the studio in 2005 and became more involved computer-aided design and teaching. John started in theater studying at Purchase College in 1973; he was a member of the founding class in Theatre Design Technology. In 2008, he returned to Purchase to teach Stage Carpentry and run the scenic shop, where he became a mentor to many students. Teaching inspired him to publish an interactive video iBook: Creating Scenery and Props with SketchUp®.

Fine woodworking is one of John’s passions, so he uses many of his joinery techniques to produce high-quality scenery and exhibits. In 1993, he founded The Farm Studio: a film and video studio. For several years John’s primary business was designing and building sets for theatre, video, film, and commercials.

In 2014, John began freelancing as technical designer for many companies in the New York metropolitan area and developed a unique approach to maximizing the potential of CAD software. John’s workflow incorporates an integration and synthesis of AutoCAD, Vectorworks, SketchUp, Rhino, and Adobe Illustrator to transform designs into 3D models and 2D fabrication drawings. He uses Vectorworks for design; Illustrator for vector lines; SketchUp for 3D models for presentation, enhanced by the rendering engine V-Ray; and AutoCAD as the binder of all the programs and fabrication and CNC file preparation.
