Crisis Management in Tourism

The history of modern tourism records many localized and some international crises characterized by extreme and sudden reduction in demand for specific destination areas or types of tourism product. Managerial responses to such events include both problem solving and market recovery steps, but these vary in effectiveness and recovery may be slow to occur after the initial problems are overcome. With examples drawn from the UK, Europe, America, Australia and Asia, this book brings together a range of expert academic analysis of the latest thinking and practice in this increasingly important area of tourism management.

About the Author

He has retired from full time academic life, and is Visiting Professor at Leshan Normal University, Sichuan, P.R. China. His research interests include tourism service quality, destination management, crisis management and elephant tourism. Eric’s publications include nearly 100 journal articles, book chapters and conference papers. The Elephant Tourism Business is Eric’s twentieth authored or edited book.

Tourism Management, Marketing, and Development: Performance, Strategies, and Sustainability

Companies and destinations in the tourism sector are confronted with increasing managerial challenges and have to deal with a competitive, turbulent, and fast-changing environment. The understanding that both tourism companies and destinations endowed with the best assets (natural and cultural) cannot survive the escalating international competition without good managerial practices, has provided significant momentum for the development of the disciplinary field of tourism management in the last three decades.

This volume recognizes the relevance of travel, tourism, and tourism activities as major economic drivers in the contemporary global economy, with a specific focus on performance, strategies, and sustainability. It is the collective intellectual effort of a number of international scholars, who cultivate original research on tourism management from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Together, they outline the importance for tourism companies and destinations to achieve and maintain a sustained competitive advantage by embracing sustainability and a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) approach to performance.

Consisting of five sections and over 50 entries, this book includes nine of the most important models in tourism study. It begins by reviewing general concepts, disciplines, and topics, and then considers the tourist, including areas such as demand, experience, gaze, psychology and typologies. A fourth section covers intermediation, distribution and travel, reviewing aspects such as travel agencies, tourist flows and multi-destination travel patterns. The final section encapsulates the tourism destination itself, covering organizations, the destination image, supply, seasonality and more. Encyclopedic cross-referencing between entries makes navigation easy, while in-depth analysis, exercises and further reading suggestions for each of the selected areas provide the context and detail needed for understanding. Entries can be used individually as a reference, or as part of the whole for a complete introduction to tourism theory.

Sustainable Tourism: Business Development, Operations, and Management lays out a road map to launching and building a business in one of today’s most exciting industries. It prepares those embarking on new careers to tackle the complexity of sustainability issues by thinking like entrepreneurs and acting like business owners. Students and professionals can rely on this text as both a start-up and ongoing implementation reference that will stack the odds of success in their favor.

Sustainable Tourism provides an overview of exciting developments in the sustainable-tourism industry. It helps new entrepreneurs assess the viability of ideas and products against sustainable criteria. Through sequential chapters, it delivers step-by-step instructions for minimizing environmental impact, establishing sustainability practices, obtaining financing, and marketing to and reaching customers. The standards-based text also examines how the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Sustainability Guidelines shape sustainable tourism, providing a global framework from which to build the skills needed for success.

Key features include the following :

• 13 online video case studies of sustainable tourism destinations from around the world give students a global text from which to build their own businesses and provide a model for how sustainable tourism works.

• An online workbook guides learners through the completion of a business plan by the end of the term.

• An online image bank presents photos, figures, and tables from the book that may be downloaded for use in presentations.

• Forms and worksheets from the book are available for download.

• A professional development workbook, “Creating a Tourism Career from Scratch” (appendix B), is a reference for entrepreneurs starting or advancing in their careers.

Loaded with case studies, the book illustrates what works and what doesn’t when starting a sustainable tourism business. It describes how to integrate sustainability practices into daily operations, maximize the use of the web and social media in marketing, and overcome challenges in sustainable tourism. The text covers every important topic in a business start-up, including financial forecasting and analysis, customer service systems, hiring, training, and managing turnover.
