The Winners of the Residential Architect Design Awards
This year’s jury selected 10 winners that showcase the best in single- and multifamily residential architecture.
If the winners of this year’s Residential Architect Design Awards share something in common, it’s a rejection of showy displays of design bravado in favor of a quieter architecture. With the quiet comes meaningful investigation into the serious issues of the day, be it pursuing environmental sustainability, responding to the affordable housing crisis, heralding the possibilities of adaptive reuse, engaging with a landmark neighbor, or even some combination of these pursuits in a single project. Which is not to say that there aren’t some eye-catching moves—just in the service of some greater good. Taken together, this year’s winners illustrate ways in which residential design can respond to the challenges of today and begin to take on those of tomorrow.
The Winners of the Studio Prize
This year’s jury selected six studios that represent the some of the best investigations in design education.
Now in its fourth year, The Studio Prize celebrates excellence in design education by recognizing thoughtful, ethical studio courses from accredited architecture schools. The students enrolled in the winning courses receive a cash prize from a $25,000 purse furnished by the program’s exclusive sponsor, Sloan. Every year, a studio with a focus on sustainability, specifically water conservation, is singled out as the winner of the Sloan Award. This year’s jury selected six winning studios, each of which exemplifies design’s capacity to improve society.
Annual R+D Awards
See the six winners selected by the jury for their efforts to address environmental and societal needs with the resources, materials, and technologies at hand.
Few things can keep design-minded researchers—and research-minded designers—from iterating on potential solutions to societal and environmental concerns. From 62 entries, ARCHITECT’s 15th annual R+D Awards jurors June Grant, Mónica Ponce de León, AIA, and Bradford Prestbo, FAIA, selected six winners that have made meaningful strides in tackling these challenges. The winners are “a good representation of the fertile ground that is the architectural space and of where the industry is heading,” Prestbo says. “Even during pandemic times, interesting design and product exploration are still going on, which is a [testament] to the industry.”
The Winners of the 68th Annual Progressive Architecture Awards
This year’s jurors selected six projects that exemplify how architecture in service of the greater good is worth celebrating.
For the 68th Annual Progressive Architecture Awards, jurors Koray Duman, Jeanne Gang, and Daimian Hines were drawn to entries that embrace what recent times have made clear are central to a thriving society: community engagement, environmental stewardship, and equitable access to services. From health care and cultural centers to housing, these six winning projects, selected from 125 entries, shed the excess in favor of the essential to tackle these core needs and underscore how architecture in service of the greater good is worth celebrating.
